Driver Shortage With Teen Drivers
The trucking industry has been faced with a significant shortage of qualified truck drivers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic progressing along with various other items including industry competitiveness, mandates, and a retiring workforce. According to the American Trucking Associations, the industry is short a record-breaking 80,000 drivers, which is a 30% increase from before the pandemic began!
In response to the industry’s growing shortage, the U.S. government has developed a widespread program in an attempt to provide the trucking industry with more eligible drivers. The new Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program will allow individuals as young as 18 years old with state-issued commercial driver licenses and clean records to drive semi-trucks across state lines under the direct supervision of an experienced driver.
Prior to this new program, 49 states and Washington D.C. allowed drivers under 21 to receive their commercial driver’s license, but they were not permitted to cross state lines.
